CAISI Visiting Scientist Program

The Cornell AI for Sustainability Initiative (CAISI) welcomes visiting scientists from around the world to collaborate on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainability. This program offers a unique opportunity for researchers to engage with CAISI faculty, contribute to ongoing projects, and foster long-term collaborations.

Program Overview

The CAISI Visiting Scientist Program is open to:

  • Professional researchers holding a postgraduate degree (e.g., M.S. or Ph.D.).
  • Enrolled graduate students at other institutions, including those working with AI4S Visiting Professors.

Visiting scientists may engage in collaborative research at Cornell for flexible durations, typically ranging from three months to one year per visit. Multiple visits are possible, depending on mutual interest and the scope of the collaboration.

Appointment Title and Support

Researchers selected for this program will receive the title of CAISI Visiting Scientist, granted upon the recommendation of a CAISI faculty member. This designation reflects their active engagement with the CAISI community and their contributions to advancing research in AI for sustainability.

While most visiting scientists are supported primarily by their home institutions, supplementary support may be available through CAISI faculty hosts. This can include travel assistance and/or a stipend to help offset living expenses during the visit. Any such support is subject to mutual agreement between the visiting scientist and the faculty host.

Application Process

Prospective applicants should:

  1. Identify a CAISI faculty host whose research aligns with their academic or professional interests.
  2. Collaborate with the faculty host to define the scope of the visit, including research objectives, duration, and expected outcomes.
  3. Submit an application to AI4S@cornell.edu, including:
    • Curriculum vitae (CV)
    • Research plan
    • Letter of support from the CAISI faculty host
